Villa Pointe-à-Poké
Saint Jean, Saint-Barthélemy
Positioned on a mountainous peninsula between the popular beaches villages of Anse des Cayes and Anse de Saint Jean, the proposed villa takes a north-facing orientation for minimal exposure to severe winds during hurricanes, the primary risk. A series of pavilions, modeled after the vernacular "case à vend" typology of small independent bungalows connected by informal courtyards, each have their bathroom facilities, serviced by underground cisterns as their foundations.
Exposed piping and utilities provide easy access for maintenance. Rugged construction materials like reinforced concrete and honed stone floors are balanced by delicate joinery and finishing, such as wall reveals between walls and ceilings. Partitions are rendered in a local seaweed-lime plaster for waterproofing given the high-moisture environment. Apertures are also oriented northward to avoid excess sun exposure, especially during the summer months.
