Situated within the Massachusetts General Hospital complex, the proposed office buidling houses the new laboratory and office space. Stabilized by two central cores, the filigree diagrid structure of timber-clad steel beams dissolves the threshold of what is inside and outside of the building’s bounds. 3.0m construction modules interlock to enclose the offices and meeting rooms.
At the macro scale, the height of the vertical elements increase from the scale of the low-rise residential buildings south of the site, transitioning to the larger medical buildings north. A public plaza of birch trees in front of the building eases this transition. Roller shades are mounted to the filigree members to passively insulate the interior volumes.
The creation of cove ceilings signal informal thresholds within otherwise continuous spaces, also allowing for the installation of warm indirect lighting to combat the cool tones of the white marble floors. Walls have been finished in white-washed wood slats to soften the elevator lobby.
